Ella Fitzgerald“The only thing better than singing is more singing”

Who I am
I am a community musician and singer with deep roots in East Devon. I am a choir leader and singing teacher as well as a performing artist, composer and music arranger. I was born and grew up in East Devon and feel a strong bond to this place and to the communities here.
I advocate that singing is for everyone, of all ages, abilities and walks of life. My 17 years working in community music confirms my belief that not only can everyone sing – everyone can have a beautiful voice.
I studied Music at The University of Birmingham, majoring in composition and performance as a vocalist. I continued my studies at Goldsmith College, University of London, completing an MMus in Composition.
Collaboration is at the heart of my work. I believe in the power of the arts to connect; to bring together individuals and communities, but also a sense of connection with one’s own self and with the world around us.

What I do
I create opportunities for everyone to explore their voices and imaginations with a sense of fun, curiosity and enjoyment. I also share music with audiences through performing as a singer, often co-creating and collaborating with other artists.
I am delighted to have had experience of leading creative projects and choirs with community groups of all ages and ranges of ability – including young people with disabilities and their families, people living with respiratory conditions, recently arrived asylum seekers and open access groups for anyone to attend, including those completely new to singing.
My approach is for music-making to be welcoming, inclusive and joyful. Whilst I care deeply about making excellent music, I also understand that connecting with other humans is key to the most successful session; the chance not only to sing together, but to smile and laugh.

Why I do it
I believe that singing is for everyone, and that music has the power to change our lives! I’ve seen how singing can make us feel happier and healthier, build bridges between us and strengthen our communities.
My emphasis is on participation for all – finding meaningful ways for each of us to engage in making music, regardless of background, current level of ability or experience.
The working of the human voice is fascinating to me. Through my vocal training and background as a singing coach, I aim to empower participants to get the best from their own unique voice and to feel the freedom, confidence and sheer joy this can bring.

Thank you for taking the time to learn more about me. I look forward to singing with you!
